Researchers have identify a hormone which increases a desire to drink water in response to specific nutrient stresses. e.g. ketogenic diet, alcohol.
Recent study , showed FGF 21 administration in mice stimulates drinking of water and helps to prevent dehydration. This response is mediated partly through neurons in hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is a small region of the brain located at the base of the brain, near the pituitary gland. FGF21 is fibroblast growth factor and is produced in liver. Consumption of alcohol increases blood levels of FGF21 in humans. Maximum level of FGF21 levels is seen around two hours after drinking alcohol.
