An oral tablet or capsule formulations commonly enjoy higher patient compliance and significantly improve the quality of life patients. But delivery of proteins such as Insulin is challenging due to poor bioavaibility caused by enzymatic breakdown of proteins in gastrointestinal tract.
Scientist has developed ionic liquid-based oral insulin using choline and geranate (CAGE) ionic liquid. This formulation significantly enhanced oral insulin absorption by efficiently mitigating the gastrointestinal barriers. This formulation is safe and has shown effectiveness in animal studies. Even low insulin doses (3–10 U/kg) brought about a sustained and significant decrease in blood glucose levels. It can be stored safely at room temperature for 2 months and under refrigeration for 4 months.
Insulin is currently available as an injectable formulation. Injection site reactions such as pain, redness or irritation may occur after its administration causing discomfort to patient.
