Hair loss is one of the commonly seen and disturbing side effects to most of the cancers patients receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy or target therapy. Cancerous cells are rapidly growing cell. Chemotherapy drugs and radiotherapy affect rapidly growing cells including normal cells which have rapid growth rate

Rapidly growing cells in bodies are:

  • Blood-forming cells in the bone marrow
  • Hair follicles
  • Cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system

When one will notice hair loss?

Hair loss is begins in 1-2 weeks following start of therapy and tends to increase 1 to 2 months into treatment. Amount of hair loss varies from person to person, drugs combination.  Hair loss may be seen throughout the body (e.g. head, face, underarms, pubic region , arms, and legs,). After stoppage of chemotherapy hair start regrowing after approximately 1-3 months later. New hairs may be different in colour, texture (thinner).

What are the ways to deal with hair loss?

1)      Modification of Hairstyle:

Hair cut before start of therapy. By doing this baldness appears as less dramatic change. Also it takes less time to regrow short hair.

2)     Cold cap therapy:

Cold cap does not prevent hair loss in all but help to reduce or prevent in some patients. Cold cap reduces temperature of scalp either by ice packs or circulation of coolant which leads to narrowing of blood vessels and decrease in blood supply. Thereby delivery of chemotherapy to drugs to hair follicle is reduced. Few patients can experience headache while using cold cap.

3)      Hair and scalp care:

  • Use fragrance-free shampoo to clean hair.
  • Avoiding  washing hair every day
  • Don’t scrub hairs vigorously.
  • Use of sunscreen lotion while going outside.
  • Gentle styling hairs with wide toothed comb.
  • Hair massage to remove dry skin

4)      Wigs and hairpieces.
