Thinking of ways to lower risk of early death? Running does helps!

WHO (World health organisation)  recommend that adults take part in 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week.

It is still unclear how does running participation and the frequency or duration of running benefit and reduces the risk of all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality. To investigate the same ,researchers reviewed fourteen studies from six prospective cohorts with a pooled sample of 232 149 participants .On follow up over 5.5 to 35 years , 25 951 died. Study results showed, any amount of running is beneficial and results in a 27 % reduction in death from all causes of  death .

What are the new findings?

  • Running participation is associated with 27%, 30% and 23% reduced risk of all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality, respectively.
  • Significant reductions in mortality risk can be expected for any dose of running, even just once a week or 50 min a week.
  • No evidence that mortality benefits increase with higher amounts of running.

Take away message :

  • Any amount of running, even just once a week, is better than no running.
  • Running, regardless of its dose, would probably  lead to substantial improvements in population health and longevity.
