Actress Sonam Kapoor was detected with diabetes when she was still a teenager. And has featured in ads  raising awareness about diabetes as a part of Max India Foundation's health initiative .

WHO global report on diabetes says:

  • The number of people with diabetes are 422 million in 2014.
  • The global prevalence of diabetes among adults over 18 years of age is 8.5% in 2014 .
  • Diabetes prevalence has been rising more rapidly in middle- and low-income countries.
  • Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.

According to the global diabetes community, the estimate of the actual number of diabetics in India is around 40 million.

Early diagnosis can be accomplished through testing of blood sugar.Treatment of diabetes involves diet and physical activity along with control of  blood glucose and known risk factors that damage blood vessels.
