11·5 million induced abortions took place outside of health facilities.

The first national study of the incidence of abortion and unintended pregnancy in India, published in The Lancet Global Health found that 15.6 million abortions were performed in the country in 2015.The study found a rate of 70 unintended pregnancies per 1000 women and nearly half of all pregnancies were unintended. These findings suggest that there is great need for improvements in contraceptive services for women and for couples in general in India.

Out of 16.5 millions abortions ,only 3·4 million abortions (range 2·8 million–3·9 million; 22%) were provided in health facilities.64% of facility-based abortions were surgical, and 36% were medication abortions.11·5 million induced abortions (range 10·8–12·2 million; 73%) were medication abortions and  took place outside of health facilities.

According to authors, India needs to consider  improvement in quality of care particularly in the public sector by making a range of contraceptive methods available, having reliable supplies of contraceptive commodities, and ensuring that staff are trained to provide comprehensive counselling and follow-up services.
