Psoriasis is a primarily chronic inflammatory disease of skin. It is mediated by the activation of specific immune pathways. Obesity, low physical activity, alcohol and smoking are known risk factor for psoriasis.
Recent study conducted in 1991 subjects who underwent bariatric surgery and 2018 controls with obesity; showed that bariatric surgery is associated with lower risk of developing psoriasis compared with usual care. Type of surgical procedures (vertical gastroplasty, gastric banding, or gastric bypass) have not shown any significant difference in reducing the risk. It has been hypothesized that rapid increase in glucagon like peptide-1 levels after gastric bypass surgery induces remission of psoriasis.
