Cataract surgery is an operation to remove cloudy lens in the eye. Cataract is most common cause of blindness in India and accounts for 62.6% of the total cases.

Function of Lens is to bend the light rays coming into the eye to help us see. Images becomes hazy or blurred once lens becomes cloudy. During cataract surgery, cloudy natural lens is removed and it is replaced with a clear artificial lens i.e. intraocular lens. Phacoemulsification is modern cataract surgery in which an ultrasonic device is used to break up and remove a cloudy lens. Advantage of this technique is smaller incision on eye reducing healing time.
