New innovative device could improve IVF success

SPARTAN is a novel microfluidic device—Simple Periodic ARray for Trapping And isolatioN (SPARTAN). This device efficiently isolate the highly motile, and morphologically normal sperm, with low epigenetic aberrance, from raw semen.

What is microfluidic?

Microfluidics is both

( a) the science which studies the behaviour of fluids through micro-channels, and                                                                                                                                                                                              (b)the technology of manufacturing microminiaturised devices containing chambers and tunnels through which fluids flow or are confined. It deal with very small volumes of fluids in femtoliters (fL). On micrometrics scale fluids  behave very differently than they do in everyday life.

WHO estimates 60–80 million couples worldwide currently suffer from the infertility.Males  accounts for 40-50% of infertility and affects approximately 7% of all men.In Indian couples seeking treatment, the male factor is the cause in approximately 23%.

Causes of male infertility:

  • low sperm concentration (Oligospermia),
  • poor sperm motility (Asthenospermia),
  • abnormal sperm morphology (Teratospermia),
  • less commonly low semen volume and
  • other seminal markers of epididymal, prostatic, and seminal vesicle function.

Researchers of study feels that this approach provides a reliable and cost-effective way to accurately and noninvasively select highly motile, and morphologically normal human sperm with high DNA integrity for a successful ART outcome.SPARTAN will help to reduces the IVF treatment cost by reducing the treatment cycles to become pregnant.
