The adipose tissue is composed of at least two kinds of adipose tissue, the white adipose tissue (WAT) and the brown adipose tissue (BAT). White adipose tissue is the main energy reservoir and regulates metabolism and insulin resistance through secretions of various hormones and cytokines. Brown adipose tissue is a specialised fat responsible for the energy expenditure. Imbalance between white and brown fat is responsible for the development of obesity.

Study published in Nature journal provide initial information about how chronic sunlight exposure to subcutaneous white adipose tissue might act as a peripheral circadian sensor that contributes to metabolic health. In contrast, a lack of sufficient bodily exposure to sunlight may contribute to long-term subcutaneous white adipose tissue dysfunction.
