Alcohol consumption up to 10 g/day helps to boost cognitive performance.

Recent British study suggests alcohol consumption up to 10g/day helps to improve cognitive performance but beyond 10 g/day alcohol consumption cognitive performance deteriorates. The deleterious effect of alcohol on cognitive performance became more pronounced with increasing age.

Excessive alcohol use is also associated with numerous health problems, including:

  • Liver cirrhosis (damage to liver cells)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Various cancers, including liver, mouth, throat, larynx , and oesophagus
  • High blood pressure; and psychological disorders
  • Unintentional injuries, such as road traffic accidents, falls etc
  • During pregnancy may harm to a developing fetus
  • Alcohol dependence

What is safe drinking?

The study advices not to consume more than 10 g/day of alcohol; especially for middle and old age persons to preserve cognitive function. In India Standard drink in India i.e. 10 grams of alcohol contains 12.5 ml of pure alcohol. Generally, this amount of pure alcohol is found in

  • 250 ml of beer,
  • 100 ml of wine,
  • 30 ml distilled spirits or liquor (e.g., gin, rum, vodka, or whiskey).

Drinking on empty stomach increase absorption of alcohol and induces rapid intoxication. Eating snacks while drinking reduces the absorption of alcohol and causes gradual alcohol effects. Non aerated drinks are safer while having drink as aerated drink increase alcohol absorption and also causes irritation of gastric mucosa and gastritis.
