Worrying about obesity? Eating slowly may benefit.

Obesity and overweight can lead to an increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus , hypertension, stroke, and cancers of the breast, endometrium, and colon.

Why does obesity occur?

The fundamental cause of excess weight gain is the failure to ensure a proper balance between energy intake and energy consumption.

The study conducted on Japanese population to find effects of changes in eating speed on obesity in patients with diabetes found that:

  • Decrease in eating speed can lead to reductions in obesity and BMI
  • Frequently eating dinner within 2 hours before going to sleep, having snacks after dinner and skipping breakfast contribute to the development of obesity.

 How does eating slowly help?

Eating slowly may help to increase feelings of fullness of stomach  before an excessive amount of food is ingested.

In contrast, individuals who eat fast may continue to eat until they feel full, despite having already consumed an adequate amount of calories and thus overeating may contribute to weight gain.
