Grapes derived substances may help to control depression

Estimated 322 million people were affected by depression globally in 2015. 18 % of global estimate i.e. 57 million people are affected by depression in India. Various pathological processes such as peripheral inflammation and synaptic abnormalities are involved to produce structural and functional abnormalities in depression. Everyday scientists are working on to find novel therapeutics strategies.

A bioactive dietary polyphenol preparation is derived from grapes and is effective in protecting against diverse mechanisms associated with neurological disorders. Bioactive dietary polyphenol preparation is composed of Concord grape juice, grape seed extract and trans-resveratrol.

As per a research published in nature communications; treatment with bioactive dietary polyphenol preparation in mice significantly increases their resilience to the stress. They also found two compounds: Dihydrocaffeic acid and Malvidin-3?-O-glucoside which was derived from metabolism of spectrum of novel therapeutics. These two compounds can prophylactically prevent as well as therapeutically treat depression in mice model.

These compounds act by modulating inflammation and synaptic plasticity. Dihydrocaffeic acid reduces pro-inflammatory interleukin 6 (IL-6) while Malvidin-3?-O-glucoside modulates synaptic plasticity.
