Diet enriched with beetroot supplement improves exercise capacity in heart failure patients

Heart failure is a condition where the heart muscle doesn’t contract effectively and heart is not able to pump enough quantity of blood to meet the body's needs for blood and oxygen.

How Heart failure patients present clinically?

Heart failure patients commonly present with following symptoms:

  •         Breathing difficulty on exertion
  •         Fatigue and weakness resulting in reduced exercise capacity
  •         Swelling of foot or lower limbs
  •         Prolonged cough or wheezing with pink coloured sputum
  •         Weight gain
  •         Lack of appetite and nausea
  •         Chest pain

Dietary nitrates (NO3?) intake increases maximum oxygen consumption during incremental exercises and also improves performance in patients of heart failure having reduced heart pumping capacity. Dietary nitrates also improves contractile function of muscle and may be a valuable mean for enhancing exercise capacity in heart failure.

Approximately 80% of dietary nitrates are derived from consumption of vegetables.Sources of nitrites includes vegetables, fruits and processed meats. Nitrites are produced endogenously through the oxidation of nitric oxide and through a reduction of nitrate by commensal bacteria in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.Nitrates and nitrites of vegetable origin play an essential roles in supporting cardiovascular health and gastrointestinal immune function.

Researchers found that the beetroot supplement in diet causes significant increased in exercise duration and peak oxygen consumption while exercising.
