Graduates have more risk of depression and anxiety than general public.

New survey revealed depression and anxiety is more than six times in Graduate students compared to the general population. A comprehensive survey had included 2,279 individuals and was conducted via social media and direct email. 90 percent of the students were PhD student while only 10 percent were doing master degree.

Study showed, moderate to severe anxiety was present in 41 percent of graduate students while 39 percent had moderate to severe depression. Both disorders were more common in female graduates.

Authors stress the finding that many universities lack adequate career and professional development programs including focus on mental well being of students  and should prompt both academia and policy makers to consider intervention strategies.
